Click Here To Return To Rail Removal Story The Ex-Illinois Central Railroad Between Madison and Monroe, WI Pictured in the photos above, a lone WICT locomotive, the 615 makes its way south. These photos were taken in the early 1990's by railroad photographer Paul Knutson. In the photo on the left, the 615 crosses Hwy PD in Fitchburg, WI. Notice the overhead wigwag. The Illinois Central used these signals a lot on their lines. This crossing was remoced in 1997 when the highway was widened to 4 lanes. The center photo shows the 615 about to cross Hwy D just north of Belleville. As of 10-14-99, this crossing still remains. The grade crossing signals were removed in spring of 1999 and will be used as part of a private railroading display. The photo on the right pictures the 615 as it enters the City of Belleville from the north. You can see the Anderson Manufacturing plant in the background. Just ahead is the railroad bridge over the Sugar River. Years ago, Anderson used two rail sidings to reveive and ship goods from their plant. On 10-13-99, the sidings and sections of the main line shown here were removed to make way for a new bike trail. As this is being wrote, the dismantaling crew makes its way north towards Madison. If anyone reading this has (or knows) where there are any more pictures of trains using this rail line, please let me know. I would like to scan them and include them in this section of the web site.
