Ex- Illinois Central Main Line Rail Track at the Stewart Tunnel.
Stewart Tunnel

One of the biggest attractions on the ex-Illinois
Central is the famous Stewart Tunnel. Built in
1886-1888, this was considered to be one of the
largest construction projects of the time.

The Stewart Tunnel has been the scene of social
events for over 110 years. During construction in
1887 each Sunday would see numerous horses and
buggies traveling to the tunnel for a Sunday picnic
and day out at the tunnel.

This is the south portal of the tunnel which is
located between Monticello and Belleville.
