In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by awarding points based on execution, difficulty, spectator appeal and flow. Elaborate costumes and staging intermix with music and fast action on the water as an announcer leads the audience through the show. Mad City tallied 2,184.50 points in defeating runner-up Wonder Lake (1,984.98 points) of Wonder Lake, Ill., and the Rock Aqua Jays (1,938.12 points) of Janesville, Wis. Little Crow (1,806.98 points) of New London, Minn., and the Backwater Gamblers (1,757.70 points) of Rock Island, Ill., rounded out the top-five placements in the 14-team field. The Show Ski National Championships also featured athletes competing individually in swivel, doubles and multi-jumping acts. Anne Smyczek of Waukesha, Wis., won the swivel event, scoring 16.70 points; the father-daughter duo of Doug and Rebecca Ribley of Medina, Ohio, won their second consecutive doubles title, tallying 17.28 points, and Mad City won the Team Jumping competition.
